Carpathian Painted Box Bench with Pull-Out Storage, C1900–1920
A vernacular wooden box bench from the Carpathian Mountains, dating to the early 20th century. Made locally for domestic use, its simple, almost naive construction reflects the practical nature of furniture in rural mountain communities, where individual pieces often served several purposes. The hinged seat lifts to reveal storage, while the lower section pulls out to form a narrow sleeping space.
The bench retains its original painted finish in a distinctive deep mineral green, with a softly chalky surface and areas of wear revealing the natural timber beneath. Its broad boarded back, straight arms and uncomplicated construction are entirely without ornament, with the richness of the old paint providing the principal decorative element.
In good antique condition, with knocks, rubbing and areas of paint loss consistent with over a century of domestic use.
H (to seat) 48cm, H (to back) 89cm, L 189cm, D 53cm
