Basque Country Oak and Pine Monk's Bench Table, C1830
An unusual monk's bench from the Basque Country, C1830, constructed in oak and pine, with a hinged back that folds forward to convert the bench into a substantial dining table. The broad, planked tabletop is supported by the shaped armrests when lowered, while the bench retains a simple boarded seat, sturdy square legs and a low stretcher.
The construction has a distinctly vernacular character, with subtle irregularities reflecting its individual making, including a slightly longer overhang at one end of the tabletop. The timber has a warm, mellow colour, with visible grain, knots and traces of age throughout.
In good antique condition, retaining the character and patina of the original timber. As a dining table, it comfortably seats six, with room for up to eight.
