A large-scale original acrylic on paper work by Trevor Bell (1930–2017), signed, titled Push and dated 1962.

A bold and energetic work, with broad passages of deep black set against vivid blue. The sweeping forms and physicality of the brushwork are characteristic of Bell’s increasing interest during this period in movement, landscape and the dynamics of painting. The paper shows some natural signs of age and tonal variation, retaining the character and honest surface of a work made more than sixty years ago.

By 1962 Bell had established himself as an important figure in British abstraction and was Gregory Fellow in Painting at the University of Leeds. His work during the early 1960s became increasingly ambitious in scale and form, while attracting recognition both in Britain and internationally.
