An original oil on board by Russian-French artist Nicolas Issaïev (1891–1977), signed lower left and believed to date from the 1930s.

A richly worked abstract composition with a distinctly interwar character. Overlapping circles, diagonals and geometric forms show the influence of Cubism, while the muted blues, greens and earthy tones give the work a strong period palette.

Born near Odessa, Issaïev trained in Odessa and Kharkiv before settling in Paris in the 1920s. By the 1930s he was an established painter and theatre designer, working across figurative painting, landscape and increasingly abstract compositions.
