Savoyard Folk Art Cockerel Tulipière, C1960
A French folk art pottery tulipière in the form of a cockerel, from the Annecy area of Haute-Savoie. Hand-modelled with a wonderfully naive character, heightened by its simple painted features and irregular form. A series of tubular openings rise from the back and tail, designed to hold individual stems so that an arrangement of flowers forms the plumage.
The surface is finished in a richly varied green glaze, with darker olive tones, areas of pooling and touches of brown decoration. Marked to the underside with a blue handwritten inscription including Annecy. A distinctive example of the decorative and functional pottery associated with the Savoyard folk tradition.
