A hand-thrown and glazed Italian apothecary jar dating from the mid-19th century. Originally used to store herbal remedies, the jar bears the hand-painted inscription "Stafisagria", referring to delphinium staphisagria, a medicinal herb historically used by apothecaries despite its toxic properties.

The front is further decorated with a painted apothecary symbol, identifying the jar's contents for use within a dispensary or pharmacy. Rich in character, the piece displays the irregularities and patina associated with handmade pottery of the period.
