An original work in watercolour and ink on paper by Alistair Grant, C1978 - 80. Presented in a bespoke hand-painted and waxed wooden frame, with museum glazing.
Alistair Grant (1921 - 1997) was a familiar figure on the London art scene. Best known as a printmaker, he spent his entire teaching career in the printmaking department at The Royal College of Art, where he later became Professor. He was regarded as a pioneer in his exploration of mixed media techniques.
Grant was also an accomplished colourist and painter. In the early 1980s, his work shifted toward a more open expressionist style, characterised by sweeping brushstrokes and a newly vibrant palette. This transformation was inspired by time spent along the Normandy coastline, particularly around Etaples and Le Touquet.
Grant would create cyphers from the shapes and forms in the landscape, which he would offset against curtains of colour. These evoke bright or misty days, blazing skies or sunsets, beaches or harbours. These watercolour and ink paintings are descriptions of places he loved and returned to repeatedly.
