Cliffe was a painter, printmaker and educator who was born in Scarborough, Yorkshire. When he was in the Army in World War II he met the painter William Scott in Wales, then in 1946 enrolled as a student at Bath Academy of Art, where he was later invited to join the staff. The work of Cliffe was shown in several international exhibitions and at two Venice Biennales. He had his first solo show of paintings at the Redfern Gallery in 1956, and three years later his first one-man print show at St George’s Gallery.
