A remarkable set of 24 French painters' colour sample boards, or nuancier, dating from the 1950s and 60s . Each wooden strip records a series of individually mixed paint colours, with handwritten colour references, names and dates to the reverse. Originally used as a working archive for recording and reproducing particular shades, the collection has acquired an extraordinary graphic quality through years of use. Displayed together—showing the fronts, backs, or a combination of both—the boards form a unique and highly decorative wall installation, their bands of colour creating an accidental piece of mid-century abstraction.

Each H 55cm, W 11cm
