Van den Berg trained in drawing and painting at evening school in Groningen between 1930 - 1933. He was able to devote himself completely to his artistry from 1939, when he began to rent a studio there. His style developed from naturalism through impressionism and cubism to constructivism, becoming more abstract in his later years.
