A handsome pair of oak armchairs by artist and designer Charles Dudouyt (1885 - 1946) from France, C1940. They have been historically painted off-white which now shows age and wear, making them all the more distinct and pleasing. The chairs are generously proportioned and supremely comfortable with their straw seats in very good condition.
Artist and designer, Dudouyt founded his first furniture factory in 1920, working in the traditional French rustic style. Following a move to Paris, he set up a factory there in 1933 which saw his designs focused on strong Art Deco forms, pairing playful geometrics with an absolute attention to the craft and construction of each piece.
